In my family as a child we would take turns every year playing "Santa" on Christmas morning. Every year it would be one of the kids turns to pass out all of the presants under the Christmas tree to their addressee. I have 2 older sisters and my turn came every 3 years. I looked forward to passing out the presants, the years couldn't go by fast enough. To be the first to hold, shake, and guess what was hiding inside. I now have passed this on to my own children.

Our favorite family tradition is to be a Secret Santa to a family in need. We provide some presents and a holiday meal for them and leave it on the porch ring the doorbell and run! This tradition started whe we got married and we have done it for 20 years. We started because of an experience I had growing up. My parents had a large family and were poor. I remember one Christmas when I was fourteen years old. My Dad had been laid off and had found various odd jobs for some money. It still wouldn't be enough for Christmas. I gave my Dad all of my babysitting money too. We knew Christmas would be very limited this year. On Christmas Eve, after the younger kids had gone to bed the door bell rang and I went and opened the door. There on the porch was sitting three large boxes filled with presents and bags of food. I was astonished and touched by the gifts. As we bought them in the house, we realized that it was food for our Christmas meal and presents for each child in the family. We put them under the tree and on Christmas morning we opened the presents from our "Santa". There was warm clothing for each us and two presents for each child. I will always remember that I got my Christmas wish of a curing iron and a book that year. What a beatiful gift of hope someone gave our family that year.

Every Christmas my entire extended family after opening presents at their homes will get together for dinner at my parents house. It is the one time of year I always get to see all my aunts, uncles, cousins and all their kids.

Instead of staying up late on New Year's Eve, we wake up early for to hike or snowshoe and watch the sun rise on the new year.

Thank you for your comments. It is great to hear people's stories. Tradition is a big part of the memories we hold on to and incorporate into our own families as we grow. One tradition that I carried on is the exchange of Christmas Eve gifts. There is a special magic in receiving that first gift of the holiday.

Our family has a Christmas party every year.Their is 180+of us.We have a pot luck dinner then slay ride and sing Christmas songs all over the town of Lehi.My mother bless her heart, gives every single one of us a carefully thought out present every year. We've tried to get her to just do cards or something but she'll have non of that. It's her favorite time of the year and she starts preparing for it in about January because it takes her all year to amass all the gifts. She's not wealthy by any means but her devotion to family beats anything I've ever seen.If anyone deserves a relaxing evening at your wonderful resort it's her,Ola Keller of Lehi Utah-Meeker Colo. The finest mom-Grandmom-Great Grandmom-GReat Great Grandmom on the Planet...

My family line is from Sweden on both of my parents side, so the Swedish open their gifts under the tree on Christmas Eve and then get more gifts from Santa Clause the next morning. Since both my parents were raised this way, this is how we were raised too. Every Christmas Eve my whole family gets together and we have a big yummy dinner and then we read the nativity story and open presents after that. But it's not just opening presents, it's the way we do it that makes it so much fun. After dinner my dad counts up all of the presents under the tree then types up two sets of the number on his computer. we cut them all up into little pieces and one set we tape onto each gift and the other set we fold up the individual numbers and put them in a box. Someone goes first and picks a number out of the box and then goes and finds the gift under the tree and gives it to the person it is for. That person opens their gift while everyone is watching and then after the gift is opened and oohed and ahhed at then the person who opened their gift goes and picks a number out of the box. Depending on how many presents are under the tree it takes a few hours and is so much fun and fantastic family time!!

My wife and I have a hybrid of two cultures every year. We stay up as late as we can and eat dinner. At some point one of us escapes into the other room, and vuala, Santa has dropped by while the kids were distracted and they stay up even later playing until they can't anymore.

One of our favorite Christmas traditions is ‘secret Santa’. We love to find someone who may be in need during the holidays and take the kids to help us deliver a present on their doorstep… after which we run like crazy so they won’t figure out who it was!

We actually just started something this year that we will now do every year. We drove up to Temple Square in SLC on a Tuesday night instead of a weekend. It was so nice not to fight for space on the sidewalks so my kids could enjoy the nativity sets and lights without a rush. We also ate at the Lion House pantry where the kids loved eating cafeteria style and my 6 year old boy loved eating in an old house. We had so much fun and actually felt the Christmas Spirit instead of the Christmas rush.
